Special Games Benefiting Victims of the Australian Bushfires

Wednesday, 15 January 2020 by Susan Williamson

All of us have heard about the devastating effects of the Australian bushfires.  Not only has there been loss of human life and personal property, but millions of animals have been killed and their habitats destroyed. The effects of these fires will be felt for decades and will cost untold billions to remedy.

Currently, the ACBL has no plans to hold any special games to benefit the victims of these fires.  One of our very empathetic players, Elaine Hargrove, has suggested that Fun and Games hold event(s) to raise money to help all those, both human and animal, who have been affected. Fun and Games is pleased to carry out this wonderful suggestion.

The first event will be held on Monday, January 27th, at 10:30 am.  It will not be a charity game per se, because we have not yet run any charity games benefiting ACBL Charities this year, and each club must do that before any games benefiting other charities may be held. This Monday game will be an Upgraded Club Championship, with all proceeds benefiting the Australian Red Cross. (We have earned Upgraded Club Championships for every ten new members we have recruited.  I can't think of a better way to use one.) The card fee is the usual $10, with players asked to contribute whatever amount they can to benefit people who have lost homes, cars, relatives, and in some cases, absolutely everything they had.

The second event, a Unit Championship, will be held on Friday, February 7th, at 10:30 am, with the club's picking up the extra fees involved. (The card fee is the usual $10). As with the game on the 27th, we cannot call it a charity game, but we would like to raise money to benefit Victoria Zoos, an organization spotlighted by the Oklahoma City Zoo for the purpose of making donations to help wildlife victims.  It has been estimated that over 500,000,000 animal lives have been lost, including some who were endangered. In addition, the habitats of many species have been destroyed.

If you are unable to attend either game, but would like to donate, please give your contribution to the Director of any game.  The Directors will be given directions on how to be sure the donations are included with the money we send to the selected charities.
